Controversy off the court has dominated headlines for the Los Angeles Clippers, and coach Doc Rivers must re-focus his players on the Golden State Warriors.
The Clippers called a team meeting on Saturday in the aftermath of an audio recording being leaked of owner Donald Sterling making racist remarks to his girlfriend, and while a boycott was considered, Rivers has insisted his players will play.
Despite all the sharp criticism from around the league of Sterling, all Rivers cares about at this point is building on the Clippers’ 2-1 lead in this series, and taking another important step towards making the second round.
Warriors coach Mark Jackson has echoed the thoughts of many by insisting that there is “no place” for Sterling’s remarks in the league, but he was also keen to remain focused on the task in hand.
Having dropped their first home game last time out, Jackson knows that he must get a response and that has to start with limiting Blake Griffin.
The Clippers star is averaging 27.7 points through the first three games and has been dominant in the paint as well as working on his jump-shot. As a result, with Andrew Bogut still sidelined, Golden State will need a Plan B.
In turn, they also need more production from point guard Stephen Curry who was limited to just 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting in Game 3, while Klay Thompson picked up the slack with a team-high 26 points.
DeAndre Jordan is also an issue as the Clippers control proceedings inside, and ultimately it could come down to whether or not the Warriors are able to shoot lights out and put this game to bed in front of a passionate home crowd.
