Van Gaal wants centre-back to lead his backline next season.
Manchester United’s pursuit of top Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels could be obstructed by Spanish giants Barcelona, who want the German to replace their retired star Carles Puyol at the Nou Camp.
United’s new boss Louis van Gaal is keen on making several changes to the defence that let in too many goals at Old Trafford last season, and has earmarked his former player Hummels as the one to lead the change at the club.
With experienced defenders Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand departing the club, 25-year old Hummels has been lined up to be the main defender at Old Trafford, and the Daily Express reports that the English giants are willing to make a final offer of £20 million for the centre-back.
Barcelona meanwhile, are aware of the situation and want to hijack the Red Devils’ deal by promising Hummels Champions League football next season and giving him a more lucrative wage package.
