Bacary Sagna could be Old Trafford bound…

Louis van Gaal, who is set to take the reigns at Manchester United following his World Cup campaign with Holland, wants to bring Arsenal’s out of contract defender to Old Trafford in time for the 2014/15 campaign…
The legendary boss wants to sign Bacary Sagna on a free transfer, and is willing to meet the ageing Frenchman’s extravagant contract demands in order to complete a deal, reports the Daily Mail.
Sagna has been a stalwart figure at Arsenal since arriving at the Emirates in 2007. In that time, he’s made over 200 Premier League appearances, and his consistently strong defensive performances means that both of the Manchester giants want to secure the 31-year-old’s signature.
Manchester City have already opened talks with Sagna’s representatives over a potential £100k-per-week contract, but United are prepared to match their bitter rival’s offer.
City already have the superb Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, so the prospect of guaranteed first-team football may make United a more attractive option, despite the fact the Red Devils will not be playing in next season’s Champions League.
Sagna though wants his future resolved before the World Cup, so a decision on his club for next season is likely to be made in the coming weeks.
Louis van Gaal is expected to make multiple transfers this summer to mark his arrival at Old Trafford. Not only is Sagna a target, but the manager wants Mats Hummels to replace Rio Ferdinand, and brilliant Bayern Munich pair Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller to bolster his roster.
The right-back position needs strengthening, with Brazilian Rafael enduring a pretty average season, and doubts remaining over the suitability of both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the role.
If United were able to pip City to Sagna’s signature, it would likely prove an extremely astute piece of business.
Sagna is superb defensively, and is rarely caught out of position. He also provides an offensive threat up the right flank, and can link up with midfielders as he’s technically competent in possession.
This term, Sagna made 34 Premier League appearances, scoring once and assisting two more goals.
The Frenchman played his final game for Arsenal during yesterday’s FA Cup final against Hull City, and signed off in style with a strong performance in the Gunners’ heroic 3-2 comeback victory.
