The Dutchman took over at United this summer as the Reds look for a long-term replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson, with David Moyes failing in his single season with the club last term.
Van Gaal has divided critics in his time in the Premier League, but is happy with life in England and looking to stay on for five years, according to reports.
United will certainly need to secure a top four finish this season and show signs of progress before van Gaal is guaranteed of earning that amount of time.
