The 63-year-old Netherlands boss is odds-on to succeed Tim Sherwood after the World Cup and Van Gaal reportedly wants to make Ajax centre-back Joel Veltman his first signing for the club, should he land the job.
Veltman, 22, was given his first international cap by Van Gaal and has been linked with Chelsea and Man United this season.
Spurs are likely to need a new centre half this summer, with Jan Vertonghen – formerly of Ajax – making plenty of noises about the importance of Champions League football lately.
Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars, a former Arsenal star, has vowed that the Amsterdam club will fight to keep Veltman, who recently agreed to a pay-rise and one-year contract extension.
However, the Dutch club have been willing to sell to Spurs in the past, with both Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen having swapped the Amsterdam ArenA for White Hart Lane in the previous two summers.
