Wenger could cop more abuse if he sells Vermaelen to Red Devils.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may have just won the FA Cup last season to break the club’s eight season long trophy drought, but he will have to bear the brunt of more insults from the fans of the club if he agrees to sell current Gunners’ skipper Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United.
The Red Devils are reportedly plotting a £15 million move for the Belgian, who has been unsettled for over a year at the Emirates after going down the pecking order to the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
The burden of the captain’s arm-band on the 28-year old is not doing him any good either, and Wenger is also said to be in the market for a new centre-back.
While it may not be all that bad a decision to let Vermaelen leave for a hefty £15 million, the fact that arch rivals United are the frontrunners to sign the woefully out of form defender will leave a sour taste in the mouth of the Gunners’ faithful, who had to endure the heartbreak of seeing their once talisman striker and former skipper Robin van Persie leave for Old Trafford in 2012.
