The best XI to never have won the Champions League: Former Arsenal stars and Chelsea stars miss out
Fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have now withdrawn from the race for the 24-year-old who looks certain to leave Germany after failing to renew his contract, which expires in 2016, with BVB.
The Daily Express quote Klaus Allofs, the sporting director of Wolfsburg as saying his side are no longer interested in trying to work a move for the player.
“Gundogan is not an option at Wolfsburg,” said Allofs.
The potential exit of Gundogan has the potential to impact another summer transfer deal involving Borussia Dortmund.
Mats Hummels has long been touted as almost certain to leave the club at the end of the season in favour of a move to Manchester United.
However, Mirror Online say Dortmund have a policy of letting just one star player leaving the club each summer, as the staggered exits of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski showed in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Louis van Gaal was keen on a deal to be completed last summer but was knocked back and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached this summer.
