According to the Daily Mail, City considered making a bid for the unsettled winger who has also been linked with a move to PSG this summer.
Di Maria joined United in a £59.7m deal last year from Real Madrid, but suffered from a difficult first season in England with issues both on and off the pitch.
While the French champions are now willing to offer him a chance to start again, it remains to be seen whether or not boss Louis Van Gaal is open to selling and whether or not their demands can be met.
Di Maria enjoyed a solid showing at the Copa America, and he will now hope to use that as a platform to rediscover his form at Old Trafford if he is to stay with the Premier League giants.
However, there is no chance that City will now make an approach for the Argentinian international after they splashed out £49m on signing Raheem Sterling from Liverpool earlier this week.
