Pellegrini avoided the sack at the end of last season following City’s disappointing title defence, and Daily Star reports club chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak is planning to lure Guardiola to the club in 12 months’ time.
The Chilean’s contract will expire at the end of the 2015/16 season and it is understood he has not yet been offered a new deal by the cashed-up Premier League giants.
Pellegrini himself is convinced he can reclaim the Premier League trophy next season as well and lead a tilt at the Champions League title.
However with Guardiola looming, Pellegrini is under a huge amount of pressure to deliver.
City bosses are expected to dig deep into their coffers in order to lure more world-class talent to the Etihad this summer, with the club expected to make a £20m swoop on Napoli skipper Marek Hamsik, The Sun reports.
