Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Liverpool need to be better technically and creatively after their 3-1 defeat to Manchester United this evening.
But the Reds manager has said that it would be “too easy” to simply use target man Christian Benteke, who scored Liverpool’s only goal at Old Trafford with a spectacular overhead.
“We got back into the game with a brilliant goal but then we concede a disappointed third and that kills us,” Rodgers told Sky Sports after a second successive Premier League defeat.
“We need to be a lot technically better than we showed today. Over the first five games now creating goals is something we need to look at. It is too easy sometimes for us to go direct to Christian Benteke, who was excellent today. I have a group who will respond but we have to be technically better.”
United had opened up a two-goal lead courtesy of goals from Daley Blind and Ander Herrera, but Rodgers took issue with the award of the free kick from which the Dutchman opened the scoring.
He added: “We were disappointed with a couple of the goals. I never thought the free kick was a free-kick. Penalty, I think Herrera has done well, young Joe Gomez will learn he has to stay on his feet.”
Anthony Martial, United’s £36m deadline-day signing, quickly replied to Benteke’s goal with United’s third on his first appearance since becoming the world’s most expensive teenage footballer.
