Manchester United did not make a big name signing as many of their fans had hoped for before the transfer deadline, but they stayed true to form and spent a large amount of money.
According to the Daily Express, former Barcelona director and current Prime Time Sport chief executive Esteve Calzada believes that Man United wasted their money throughout the summer.
“The week before United signed Martial there were rumours Barcelona would take him for £14.6m. We made a list of the value of the top players in Europe under 21, and Martial was on the list,” Calzada said.
Man United spent £36m on former Monaco striker Anthony Martial, and his fee will increase to £58m including add-ons and bonuses.
The Red Devils also invested heavily in midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, which has also drawn some criticism.
Calzada’s claims are best supported by Man United spending a British record £59.7m on midfielder Angel di Maria in 2014.
Di Maria has since been sold to Paris Saint-Germain after a disastrous 2014-15 season at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were willing to break the bank for players such as Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, but the working relationship between the two clubs soured following the collapse of David de Gea deal.
