De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to the La Liga giants and Mata says he just wants his compatriot to “be happy.”
The 24-year-old shot-stopper has reportedly refused to sign a new deal at Old Trafford, with his current deal with the club expiring at the end of next season.
Mata was coy on compatriot’s future, but says he would prefer if de Gea remained with him at United.
“I get asked a lot about him. He’s my friend and I want him to be happy. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world today. From a personal point of view, I want him on my team,” Mata is quoted as saying by Manchester Evening News.
United are willing to play hardball with Real Madrid over de Gea, with The Sun reporting the Red Devils will demand Sergio Ramos be part of any deal for the former Atletico man.
It is unlikely that Real Madrid will want to part ways with one of its most prized possessions, however Ramos’s current deal with the club ends in 2017 and there is growing speculation that the defender wants to leave the Bernabeu.
