The clean sheet king of Primeira Liga just two years ago, Jan Oblak became one of the most expensive goalkeepers in La Liga history the following year.
Man United have struggled to secure a top flight replacement for disgruntled stopper David de Gea, but they’ll have to keep looking after their bid for Jan Oblak was rejected.
According to the Metro, Atletico Madrid has rejected a £25 million bid from the Red Devils for their 22-year-old stud of a stopper.
Though the offer would have more than doubled the estimated £12 million Atletico Madrid paid for Oblak just one year ago, the Slovenian international is expected to be a vital part of the club’s goalkeeper rotation this season despite only making 11 league appearances last year.
Jan Oblak signed for Atletico Madrid in 2014 for the most expensive goalkeeper transfer in La Liga history following a sensational year as Benfica’s starter. Oblak recorded 14 clean sheets and was named Primeira Liga Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013-14.
Man United are on the outs with reigning PFA Goalkeeper of the Year David de Gea and have all but kicked out No. 2 goalkeeper Victor Valdes from Old Trafford. With the aging Sergio Romero as the only starter with significant experience, Man United are expected to make a big splash for a big-time goalkeeper at some point – or risk a defensive struggle.
