Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has urged the club to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.
Van Gaal is understood to be keen to bolster his defence, and reports in Spain [via Metro] suggest Van Gaal has made the France international his top target.
The Dutch boss has used Chris Smalling and Daley Blind in the heart of the United defence this season, but it seems the former Netherlands boss is keen to sign one of the world’s best young defenders.
However, Varane is beginning to become an integral part of Rafael Benitez’s side and it is highly unlikely the La Liga heavyweights will want to allow the 22-year-old to leave the Bernabeu.
Metro also reports that United’s strained relationship with Real Madrid following the failed David de Gea deal has put the transfer even more in doubt.
Varane has made 68 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid since joining the club from Lens in 2011.
