The Dutchman has hinted at a “surprise” signing after watching his side defeat Club America 1-0 at the weekend.
With Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez likely to take up much of the playing time in the current squad coupled with Memphis Depay’s ability to play that role, it is felt that the Premier League giants still need to add another goalscorer.
It appears as though Van Gaal recognises that too but he is remaining coy on his name and conceded that the media has not reported on him previously.
“He’s in the process,” Van Gaal said, as reported by Sky Sports. “It’s not the striker that the media has written about. You have to wait and see.
“The transfer period is open until August 31. You have to wait.”
If United are unable to add another striker to their squad ahead of the deadline, the pressure will certainly be on Rooney to lead the line and score the goals to ensure that they make a sustained title bid this season.
However, Van Gaal seems confident that he will sign someone and has certainly left everyone guessing about who it could be.
