Liverpool’s defeat to Hull this week has virtually ruled them out of the running for claiming that final Champions League spot, meaning United will be guaranteed a return to Europe’s premier club competition.
That will allow manager Louis Van Gaal will be given free reign to spend heavily again over the summer as they prepare for the competition and a renewed assault on the Premier League.
Bale has long been on the radar of Premier League giants United and Chelsea, though the former have made him a transfer priority, and now according to reports in Spain, after much resistance, Real are now willing to listen to offers.
The Wales international would still command a generous transfer fee, but United could use goalkeeper David de Gea as something of a makeweight in any potential deal.
