Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan, according to reports.
Gaitan has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, but the transfer looked to have been put in jeopardy as the Red Devils chased Barcelona winger Pedro.
With Pedro snubbing United for Chelsea, it seems Louis van Gaal has turned his attention back to signing the £24.5m-rated Argentine international.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo [via Daily Star], super-agent Jorge Mendes has been brought in to help mediate the transfer negotiations despite the fact he does not represent Gaitan.
Mendes has a strong working relationship with Manchester United, having helped take both Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria to the club.
Gaitan has starred for Benfica since joining the club in 2010 from Boca Juniors, scoring 21 goals in 127 league appearances for the Aguias.
Ironically, Gaitan signed for Benfica to replace countrymen Angel di Maria.
