United boss Louis van Gaal is keen to solve his issues at right back and Daily Express reports the Red Devils are closing in on a £12.7m move for the 25-year-old.
Winger Antonio Valencia was used at right-back last season, while Brazilian right-back Rafael is believed to be surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal missed out on key targets in Dani Alves and Nathaniel Clyne, and Everton are seemingly unwilling to allow Seamus Coleman to leave the club.
Darmian impressed in last year’s World Cup for Italy, combining a solid defensive game with adventurous forays forward and was one of his side’s shining lights in what was a disappointing tournament for the Azzurri.
It is believed Rafael will be sold to make way for Darmian, with The Sun reporting Turkish giants Galatasaray to be his likely destination.
Darmian is also equally adept playing at centre-back, with his versatility no doubt a key factor in Van Gaal’s interest.
