Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is looking to bolster his attack ahead of the new season, and The Sun reports the Dutchman is going after the Croatia international.
Mandzukic scored 20 goals in 37 appearances for the La Liga giants this season, but it is believed Atletico boss Diego Simeone may look to move on the 29-year-old with Villarreal star Luciano Vietto set to join the club.
United will face stiff competition for the former Bayern Munich man’s signature, The Sun reporting that Serie A champions Juventus are also interested in signing the star striker.
Van Gaal is desperate to add quality to United’s front third over the summer following Radamel Falcao’s disappointing loan stint, while injuries and poor form plagued Robin van Persie’s season.
Mandzukic is currently with the Croatian national side in preparations for its crunch Euro 2016 qualifier with Italy on Friday.
