Reports in the Daily Star confirm that a January deal is unlikely, but reveal that Louis van Gaal is confident of landing the £35m-rated German next summer.
United’s interest in the player, who played a starring role in Germany’s World Cup success, has remained high since last summer, as they look to strengthen their defence.
Hummels remains United’s top defensive target although Diego Godin has been highlighted as an alternative option, while according to the source, reports in Spain also suggest that Aymeric Laporte, who is valued around £25m, is on United’s radar.
