According to The Mirror, the right-back is set to ink a four-year £90k-a-week deal with an option of an extra year with the Premier League giants.
Darmian is expected to undergo a medical at Carrington on Thursday before joining the his new teammates in the United States for a pre-season tour next week.
The 25-year-old is United’s second major signing of the summer following the £25m capture of PSV Eindhoven starlet Memphis Depay.
Darmian impressed in last year’s World Cup for Italy, combining a solid defensive game with adventurous forays forward and was one of his side’s shining lights in what was a disappointing tournament for the Azzurri.
The former Palermo and AC Milan man is also equally adept playing at centre-back, with his versatility no doubt a key factor in Van Gaal’s interest.
It is believed Rafael may be sold to make way for Darmian, with The Sun reporting Turkish giants Galatasaray to be his likely destination.
