Liverpool don’t want to buy Benteke at the asking price and Aston Villa don’t want to sell – can Man United make the Villans an offer they can’t refuse?
Liverpool faces a wealthy new entrant into the bidding war for Aston Villa superstar striker Christian Benteke.
According to the Telegraph, Man United have entered the race for Benteke and are poised to make a “big money” transfer offer to the Villans to acquire the 24-year-old Belgian striker. After selling striker Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce last week, Man United boss Louis van Gaal needs a new striker and has more than enough cash to not only match Aston Villa’s £32.5 million buyout clause.
Though Liverpool were thought to be in the final stages of a deal to acquire Benteke from Aston Villa, no final deal was put to paper and Benteke decided to travel with Aston Villa for their summer tour before the Premier League. Now that Man United have entered the fray, the Reds’ hopes of landing Benteke have no doubt been dashed since Man United can offer more money and a chance to play in the Champions League this year.
Benteke recorded 11 goals in his last 10 league games with Aston Villa to help the club escape relegation. He was the Premier League Player of the Month in April and was a huge part of the team’s run to the FA Cup Final. Benteke has scored double-digit league goals in each of the last four years and in five of the last six.
