Talks with Schneiderlin are at an advanced stage, according to the Daily Star, leaving United in pole position to beat Arsenal to the signing of the French star.
In turn, that will end Louis Van Gaal’s reported interest in Schweinsteiger, with speculation suggesting that the Premier League giants were forced to give up their chase for the German international with Bayern unwilling to part company with him.
Nevertheless, they will be delighted to tie up a deal for Schneiderlin with the Southampton midfielder expected to play a key role in the team’s push for a title next season as well as helping them in the Champions League after making it clear that he wanted to play in Europe’s premier competition.
While United expect to conclude the deal in the coming days, it remains to be seen what other business they are able to do this summer given their on-going pursuit of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.
Van Gaal has evidently identified that the backbone of his squad needs strengthening, and they are hopeful that they can reach an agreement with Madrid with the Spanish international understood to be pushing for an exit.
