Reports have suggested Otamendi would be signed as a plan B should United miss out on Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos, however, The Mirror [via AS] suggest the Red Devils are keen to sign both players this summer.
United are understood to still be keen to sign Valencia defender Otamendi despite the fact the Red Devils will have to cough up upwards of £63.7m to lure Ramos to Old Trafford.
The Mirror reports United have had a £29m bid for Ramos turned down by Real Madrid, but with the La Liga giants keen to sign David de Gea, it is expected a compromise will be reached.
Current centre-back pairing Phil Jones and Chris Smalling only recently signed new deals with the club, but the Spanish newspaper suggests Van Gaal is keen to make Ramos and Otamendi his first-choice pairing next season.
