Manchester United feel “betrayed” by Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos with reports suggesting the Spanish international will sign a new deal with the La Liga giants.
Ramos looked to be heading to Old Trafford this summer, but Daily Star reports the 29-year-old has turned down a move to the Red Devils and has now begun negotiations over a new deal to remain ar the Bernabeu.
It is understood United had a £28m bid rejected by Real Madrid but were preparing to make a second offer.
“The club was led to believe he wanted to join them and was willing to leave Real Madrid,” a Manchester United source told Daily Star.
“He was urged to make his feelings public to help speed up the transfer, but it now looks like he was playing a game all along.
“In the end it appears all he wanted was a new contract at Real and it looks like he’s going to get one as well.
“It’s not the sort of behaviour you’d expect from a player of his standing in the game. It’s like he’s betrayed United.”
Real Madrid are still believed to be keen in signing David de Gea this summer, but United are keen to play hard ball with the Spanish club and will not settle for a fee less than its £35m valuation of the 24-year-old.
United on the other hand will have to turn its attention elsewhere as Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen his defence ahead of the new season.
Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League giants, however, Valencia are understood to be desperate to keep hold of the Argentine international.
