Man United received an exceptional boost to their bid for Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar as the veteran defender became a free agent today.
According to the Metro, Ron Vlaar’s contract with Aston Villa has expired but the defender is weighing his options. Man United’s interest in Vlaar stems from the strong relationship between the 30-year-old Netherlands national team star and Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal.
Vlaar performed well for van Gaal in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with their country finishing 3rd in the tournament. Notably, the Netherlands did not lose any matches in the normal time, with the Vlaar-headed defense conceding only four goals.
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood, however, is determined to keep his captain at Villa Park.
“I’ve actually sat down with Ron and I’ve told him I want him to stay,” Sherwood told the Guardian last month.
The Villans reportedly offered Vlaar a new deal before his three-year deal expired, but the center back declined. Vlaar made his Premier League debut with Aston Villa back in 2012 when he signed from Eredivisie club Feyenoord on a £3 million deal.
