Alves joined the La Liga giants back in 2008, but Metro reports the right-back is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old has previously stated his desire to play in the Premier League, and according to Metro, United boss Louis van Gaal is an avid fan of the Brazilian international.
It is understood Alves will command wages of up to £150k-a-week, so United will have to dig deep into its coffers to lure the former Sevilla man to Old Trafford.
Despite his advancing years, Alves has played 40 games in all competitions this season as Barcelona claimed the La Liga title and have a chance to claim its fifth European crown when they face Juventus in the Champions League final next month.
Alves would provide van Gaal with a solid option at right-back after failing to settle on a defensive combination this season.
