While El Confidencial reports a transfer for Cillessen has already been agreed, United on Monday announced the club has completed a deal for former Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
Romero joins the club on a three-year deal after his contract with the Serie A club expired at the end of last season.
Cillessen has made 66 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax and has won three domestic titles with the club.
