The Man United marketing department didn’t just make an imposing campaign ad, they made a prediction.
In spite of the controversy surrounding the Man United kit release – from marketing to womens’ shirt designs – the Red Devils still shattered sales records for shirt sales in the first five days.
According to a report from the Metro, Adidas – the shirt manufacturer – has dubbed the release of the 2015-16 Man United kit “the biggest ever launch of replica.” The release of the home shirt itself smashed the Adidas sales record for a kit launch by 50% and the company reached their one-month sales projection in just five days.
“Many Adidas retail partners have reported a 200 per cent increase in day one sales compared to last year’s kit launch, experiencing phenomenal demand across the globe and declaring the Adidas Manchester United kit launch as the biggest ever launch of replica,” Adidas’ director of sports marketing Steve Marks told The Drum.
Man United signed the deal with Adidas this past season for 10 years and a whopping £750 million, the largest ever from a manufacturing sponsor.
The incredible mark is undoubtedly a testament to Man United’s consistent global popularity dating back to the dominant days of Sir Alex Ferguson. Though the Red Devils have struggled in the last two seasons, they haven’t had a season outside of the top 7 since 1990.
