Former favourite believes it’s only a matter of time before United are back to their best…
Manchester United treble winner Peter Schmeichel believes that Louis van Gaal will inspire a new wave of success at Old Trafford, providing he secures a top-four finish this term. The former Red Devils keeper believes the Dutchman will spend big at the end of the season, which will inevitably lead to success.

Schmeichel, who was quoted by the Daily Star, said: “In terms of getting results and points on the board, I think we’re much better than what we were last season. I honestly can’t remember how many points we had at this point last season but I assume we have at least 10 more points this season.
“We’re only seven points behind Manchester City. It’s not like last season when we were completely off the pace with no chance of anything at this point.
“The really positive thing for me is we’re picking up points. We’re getting three points very often. Obviously the defeat against Swansea was disappointing but we’re doing well and we’re getting points and that’s the most important thing at this moment in time.
“Let’s get back into the top four, be a Champions League club again, sign players we want to sign who want to play in the Champions League and then we can start looking at things from an entertainment value.
“Once we get back to that and show the world that we’re back on track then I think Van Gaal has the opportunity to sign anyone he wants.”
