Widely considered to be the Red Devils top target, The Metro quote German newspaper Bild as saying an opening offer has now been lodged with the Budesliga side.
It’s lower than previous amounts quoted in the press but the report says United are hopeful that it will be enough to convince BVB to sell one of their prize assets.
Hummels has been linked with United for several windows now and is seen as the ideal solution to a defence that has hardly looked secure all season.
Dortmund responded quickly to the shock resignation of Jurgen Klopp last week by quickly appointing Thomas Tuchel as their new boss.
However, it remains to be seen how the Dortmund squad will react and how many stars will follow Klopp out of the door.
Arsenal have also been linked to the German in recent weeks, say The Metro, but it seems the 26-year-old is destined for a move to Old Trafford.
