With a 10-goal season as a winger last year, Sadio Mane could be a decent consolation prize for the Red Devils.
Man United may have known in advance that they weren’t going to land Pedro – because almost immediately after Chelsea landed him, the Red Devils made a bid for Southampton winger Sadio Mane.
According to The Telegraph, Southampton have received a “surprise inquiry” Man United to sign the 23-year-old winger from Senegal.
Though Sadio Mane certainly doesn’t have the numbers of championship pedigree that Pedro has, he is a proven scoring threat from the wing with 41 goals in the past three years between Red Bull Salzburg and Southampton.
Mane joined Southampton in September of last season on a £11.8 million transfer and set a Premier League record on May 16, 2015 by recording a hat trick in 2 minutes and 56 seconds against Aston Villa – shattering the 21-year record held by Robbie Fowler.
That season, Mane was also one of the few players to score in three consecutive matches – against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal in successive weeks.
Man United are on good negotiating terms with Southampton after agreeing to a transfer for star midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin last month.
