He hopes that United can strike a deal for World Cup-winner Schweinsteiger, now Germany captain, but acknowledges that he could struggle to lure the 30-year-old away from the Allianz Arena.
The Daily Star claims that Schneiderlin is United’s fallback option and that Old Trafford officials are readying a £20m offer for if they fail in their cheeky £10m bid for Schweinsteiger.
Schneiderlin is intent on leaving the Saints for a Champions League side this summer and is believed to favour a move to the Red Devils ahead of a switch to Arsenal, who also tried to sign him last summer.
United’s swoop for the Frenchman is thought to be a goer as Southampton are interested in listening to offers which would involve Mexican striker Javier Hernandez moving to St Mary’s in part exchange.
