Having opted not to keep Radamel Falcao at the club and with Robin van Persie leaving for Fenerbahce, Van Gaal’s options are somewhat limited ahead of the new campaign.
The Premier League giants have been linked with several top names over the summer, but according to Sky Sports, they may not sign any more attacking players and go with what they have.
That would involve Rooney being the main attacking option, while Memphis Depay will be deployed in the lone striker role at times having finished as the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season.
Further, it is reported that the United boss is open to giving Javier Hernandez another chance to shine at the club, with the Mexican international struggling in recent times which in turn saw him spend a loan spell at Real Madrid last season.
Rooney scored 12 Premier League goals last year, and has failed to score more than 20 in the league since the 2011/12 campaign.
