Jesse Lingard has said that he is looking to make the breakthrough into the first team at Manchester United this season.
The England Under-21 winger spent much of last term on loan at Derby County after suffering an injury in the opening-day defeat to Swansea City.
But he has featured in both of United’s pre-season matches to date, providing Andreas Pereira with an assist in the 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday, and seems to be in Louis van Gaal’s plans.
The 22-year-old has revealed that Van Gaal is preparing him for a role on the right of a forward three, raising further doubts over the future of British-record signing Angel Di Maria.
Adnan Januzaj and Ashley Young have also been used in this role in pre-season.
“The manager has not said anything to me at the moment regarding my future,” Lingard told Press Association Sport. “I am looking to stay for the first couple of months and see what it’s like
“Obviously I would like to stay for the rest of the season, this is my club. This is where I want to stay.
“The manager has been playing me off the right this time, and he said he would like to get two players for each position (this season).
“The tour has been really good at the moment. I was (on loan) last year so it’s good to be back with all the lads and the backroom staff.”
Di Maria, who endured a mixed first season in the Premier League after his £59.7m arrival from Real Madrid, has been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain.
The Ligue 1 champions are believed to be in negotiations with United over the 27-year-old Argentine, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms to move to Parc des Princes.
