Smalling weighed in on his team’s win and was satisfied as a whole, despite the obstacles the Red Devils faced throughout the match.
“It was good to get that clean sheet. At times we didn’t play well today, but we dug in at the end and it was an important three points. It was important we got off to a good start,” Smalling said to BBC Sport.
United backline bailed out the under-par attack, who showed very little sign of life with their only goal coming as an OG courtesy of Tottenham defender Kyle Walker.
The Red Devils will have a prime opportunity to start their 2015-16 season with a 2-0 record, as they face Aston Villa on Friday.
