Here are our United player ratings from the match:
Anders Lindegaard: 9/10
The last time the deputy played a league match, he conceded five against West Brom in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final match. But today he was brilliant, making three excellent saves to deny Newcastle. A big improvement.
Antonio Valencia: 7
Stuck to his defensive duties well; Mata, Januzaj and Kagawa’s interplay could mean the former Wigan man spends more time at right back and less on the wing before the end of the season, however.
Patrice Evra: 6
Poor. The Frenchman looked his age and, more worryingly, looked disinterested. He was replaced by Buttner on the hour, suggesting he’ll face Bayern but Moyes must be wondering if the Dutchman is a better option.
Chris Smalling: 7
His first match since 1 February and looked assured and impressive. Jones and Smalling appear to be the future at centre half for United.
Phil Jones: 8
Impressive. May have played himself into contention for a start alongside Vidic against Bayern.
