According to Bild, the German will make the move to Old Trafford imminently with the fee believed to be around €20m.
It is reported that the midfielder will sign a three-year deal worth €10m per year, as he has decided to leave his homeland for a reunion with Louis Van Gaal.
United have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old throughout the summer, and he was scheduled for talks with Bayern this week to discuss his future given that his contract was set to expire next summer.
After Karl-Heinze Rummenigge conceded that Schweinsteiger was “flattered” by the interest from the Premier League giants, it appears that has developed into a desire to start a new adventure in the Premier League.
Although Van Gaal revealed that Torino and Italy full back Matteo Darmian was on his way to join the club, he made no mention of Schweinsteiger at his press conference on Friday afternoon.
As a result, it remains to be seen how much truth is behind the report, although Bild seem confident that the World Cup winner is headed for the exit door at the Allianz.
