Metro say the Red Devils are in the market for the £55 million rater Uruguayan with plans already in place to ditch Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao this summer and sign him as a replacement.
Arsenal and Liverpool are also particularly interested in signing Cavani and if all three are gunning for his services a bidding war looks set to ensue.
What could be a deciding factor is where each particular club boss sees the forward playing in the team.
A source close to the PSG star is quoted in the report as saying he has understood why he’s needed to sacrifice his natural playing position for the good of the team.
However, after two seasons at the club he feels it’s clear the role doesn’t suit him at all and he wants to consistently play as the focal point of his team’s attack – not just in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“There is no question that he will not stay one more season if the sporting situation doesn’t change. This is the bottom line,” the source added.
“He needs continuity in that position to fully express the qualities that made him a top scorer in Italy.”
