Manchester United are believed to be closing in on the £7.5m coup of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The Mirror claim that the Red Devils are growing increasingly confident of luring the German World Cup winner away from the Allianz Arena as he enters the last year of his contract.
Louis van Gaal has made signing a midfielder to play alongside or cover for Michael Carrick one of his priorities this summer, and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan have been touted as targets.

But the Dutchman worked closely with Schweinsteiger when he was in charge of Bayern between 2009 and 2011 and the 30-year-old tops his shortlist.
Schweinsteiger has won it all with Bayern – including seven Bundesliga and German Cup doubles and the Champions League, and would apparently be open to reuniting with Van Gaal for a fresh challenge.
