Man United are closing in on a deal to sign Argentina shot-stopper Sergio Romero, according to reports.
With the futures of both David de Gea and Victor Valdes up in the air, United manager Louis van Gaal is understood to be on the lookout for a replacement.
According to Metro [via Gianluca DiMarzio], United has held talks with free-agent Romero and offered the former Sampdoria man a £1.3m-a-year deal.
Italian giants AS Roma are also said to be interested in the 28-year-old, though it is understood to Serie A club could not match United’s wage offer.
The Argentina number one has struggled for first team minutes over the past two years at Sampdoria, and played second fiddle behind Danijel Subasic whilst on loan with AS Monaco two seasons ago.
Romero has previously worked with United boss Louis van Gaal at Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and was superb for Argentina during last year’s World Cup.
