New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay has revealed the reason that his Premier League shirt this season will have his first name on the back, and not his surname.
The Dutchman, who joined the Red Devils from PSV Eindhoven for £25m earlier this summer, still harbours resentment towards his father, who walked out on him when he was four.
“Those things are a part of my life,” Depay told BBC Sport. “It is not a part of football. It is a different thing.
“I have a life next to football. I have been through little situations. That makes me strong.
“I enjoy my tattoos, as you can see. I am the person I am. Everybody has to respect that.”
The 21-year-old’s squad number at Old Trafford is yet to be confirmed. He has worn 26 and nine during United’s pre-season tour, but is expected to inherit the No. 7 jersey from Angel Di Maria if the Argentine completes his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
