The Argentine was leading a counter-attack at full speed after just 29 minutes of the game but was forced to pull up clutching his hamstring which will cause concern for United boss Louis Van Gaal.
It is unclear at this stage as to how serious the strain is, but it will undoubtedly leave the Red Devils anxious for further updates to see if the injury will hamper the former Real Madrid star’s pre-season preparations.
After spending a minute or two on the ground, Di Maria was able to return to the field but was quickly replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi.
It was a bitterly disappointing end to the tournament for the 27-year-old, particularly given that he had started to find some form after scoring twice and setting up another in the 6-1 win over Paraguay in the semi-finals.
However, with pre-season training starting on Monday for United, they will now be wondering whether or not the midfielder will need longer than the expected break he would have been afforded after the tournament concluded.
Di Maria saw his first season in England blighted by injuries and lack of form, and he will be hoping that this isn’t serious so that he can return to Manchester and prepare for a successful second campaign.
