Jose Mourinho’s side produced a solid, defensive display to keep the Red Devils at bay over the weekend with Eden Hazard scoring the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The result edges them ever closer to the Premier League title with the result opening up a ten-point gap over second placed Arsenal who they will play this weekend.
There’s still an incredibly unlikely chance the Blues could still fail to win their first league title since 2010 with six games remaining.
However, Mata is already saluting the achievements of the west Londoners and thanking them for respecting him on his return to a club where he was twice nominated player of the year.
“It was really moving to feel the people’s respect and affection, and I will always be grateful for that. I thank them for such affection and I congratulate them for the title they are about to win, because it’s almost done,” he wrote on his blog.
Mata also declared how proud he was of his teammates after a particularly dominant display at Stamford Bridge.
“I felt proud of the game the team had played, keeping the ball possession, controlling the game and creating chances to score, and all this at Stamford Bridge against the leader.
“As our manager said after the game, we were loyal to our football idea, and despite the score didn’t show that, if we keep playing like this there will be many more wins than defeats, I’m pretty sure of that.”
