Louis Van Gaal is desperate to add some more strength to his side in the new year and is placing the Serie A pair at the top of his January wish list.
However, Roma are unwilling to sell the 24-year-old, who is close to full fitness after suffering a serious injury last season, and the Red Devils could have to pay as much as £75million for his services.
Vidal, meanwhile, is in hot water with his bosses at Juve, after being fined for his part in a nightclub brawl last week. But the Serie A champions are adamant that he will be going nowhere in the new year.
Van Gaal knows that signing either of them will be a tough ask, so he has sought out Gundogan as an alternative, who could face a difficult time getting back into the Dortmund side following a serious back injury.
