But Pogba could just be the cherry on the cake with United also said to be after a right-sided midfielder, a ‘ball-carrying’ defender as well as possibly targeting a right-back and a striker if they opt against, as seems most likely, taking Radamel Falcao from Monaco on a permanent contract in a £43 million deal, reports Daily Telegraph.
Surprisingly, United’s incredibly ambitious plans do not necessitate top-four status and will be attempted without the lure of Champions League football if necessary.
The report also states that there is no danger to Louis van Gaal’s tenure in charge of the club either, even if they fail to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
A midfielder of Pogba’s stature and talent is seen as key to van Gaal’s vision for the Red Devils and despite recently signing a new deal with the Old Lady of Italian football, United have apparently received encouragement that for the right price a deal could be struck.
United will however not entertain the notion of selling Angel Di Maria after just one season, despite his inconsistent form, whilst they will also battle any attempts by Real Madrid to lure David De Gea back to the Spanish capital.
