Louis van Gaal is keen to bolster his squad in January and has been eyeing a box-to-box player with some steal.
However, reports in Italy on Thursday are claiming that he is ready to sign a deal with Valencia instead.
He moved to Lisbon in 2011 from Estudiantes, in his native Argentina, and won Portuguese player of the year for 2014.
The news could force Van Gaal to make an improved offer for Roma’s Kevin Strootman, who has been another long term target for the club.
