Manchester City appeared to be close with reaching a deal for VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, but another shocking twist is developing.
Manchester United, the Metro reports, are preparing to launch a £55m bid and hijack City’s move for the former Chelsea starlet.
United boss Louis van Gaal is not giving up on the Red Devils making one last big signing, but there is only one week left before the transfer window closes.
De Bruyne had an unsuccessful stint at Stamford Bridge between 2012 and 2014, but he found his niche with Wolfsburg by scoring 16 goals in the 2014-15 season.
He also made on a whopping 27 assists, which was enough to earn him Bundesliga Player of the Year honours.
United have had bad luck in the past week with the transfer window, as they missed out on signing Pedro when he decided to go to Chelsea instead at the last minute.
They are also set to miss out on signing Bayern Munich striker Thomas Müller, but it appears that the tide may be turning if Wolfsburg are unable to decline a £55m offer.
