The Metro say the Red Devils have met the 20-year-old’s agent, Jorge Mendes, since identifying him as a top target this summer.
The report even claims Laporte himself sees a move to Old Trafford as vital to his career and progression.
The Daily Express, however, believe United will only continue with this deal if they are unable to work a deal for long-term target, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, therefore it remains to be seen if the club have given up on signing the German or are indeed looking to capture both.
United could also find themselves competing with Real Madrid and Chelsea for the French U-21 star and the proposed fee could sky-rocket.
With the Red Devils already signing Memphis Depay it looks as if the Louis van Gaal is set for another big summer in terms of transfer spend and splashing £150m on talent last year.
