Manchester United will step up its chase of Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, according to reports.
The Argentine international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months, and Daily Star reports the Red Devils will now make a move to snare the signature of the £25m-rated centre-back.
News of United’s pursuit of Otamendi comes after key defensive target Sergio Ramos jetted off to Australia with the rest of his Real Madrid teammates for the International Champions Cup in Melbourne.
It now seems unlikely that the 29-year-old World Cup winner will join United with Real Madrid officials unwilling to allow one of its most prized possessions to exit the Bernabeu.
Otamendi is certainly a cheaper option than Ramos, however, the defender is highly-rated by La Liga experts and could be shrewd signing by United boss Louis van Gaal.
The 27-year-old would be a solid addition to the Premier League giants and would join Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin as major signings this summer.
